WinAMP Skin Tips
Auto-download-install-select
Did you know if WinAMP is running while you click a .wsz skin file to download, the skin will be automatically placed into the proper directory, added to your list of available skins and become the current skin? Try it!
Two skin versions
My skins provide a choice between a 'see more' interface (aka 'clean') where you may know keyboard shortcuts and/or have already set your options for EQ, Volume Balance and prefer less feedback of audio info (Stereo vs Mono, Repeat, Position Bar) vs a 'functional' interface (aka 'buttons') to expose buttons for setting your preferences and visual indications of audio attributes.
Skin selection
Two ways to select a skin from your list of available skins: 1) Click the top left corner icon for a menu and select skins, which will pop out a menu list of skins. Clicking the Skin Browser in the pop out menu or using the keyboard shortcut Alt-S will give you a selection screen which provides a better scrolling capability for long lists of skins.
Platforms supported
Although the official WinAMP site, winamp.com documents the system requirements as a Pentium Windows-based system, they also have a Mac version posted as available in their download pages and suggest WINE under an XWindows for non-Windows systems.
WinAMP Skin FAQs
Skin not loading
Try the download again making sure no other downloads are in progress (reported cases exist of simultaneous file download problems within Windows).
Nope, skin still not loading
Check the sub-version of WinAMP for .wsz support of 2.x skins. The .wsz file is a convenient packing of skin components recognized by WinAMP 2.61 and higher. WinAMP 2.60 and earlier will not recognize the .wsz file type.
Skin does not 'play'
Installing WinAMP for the first time gives you the base skin and a sample audio track to play. The two are unrelated, meaning the base skin does not include a default audio track. Skins only contain visual information and do not have an audio file associated with them. Any supported audio file can be played with any skin selected.
Unrecognized format
Dragging and dropping a .wsz file (from the Desktop or Explorer for example) onto the WinAMP application does not install the skin. Only audio files can be 'dropped' and recognized as a valid file to play. Also, WinAMP supports the following audio file types: MP3/MP2 (MPEG audio layers 1, 2, and 3), MOD/S3M/XM/IT (digital synthesized music formats), MIDI/MID (musical instrument digital interface), WAV/VOC (digital audio file), CDA (compact disc audio), WMA (Windows Media Audio) and AS/ASFS (Audiosoft secure MP3 file).
